I want to look closely at these 3 artists.  I am drawn to these artists and I want to find the common thread that I am so interested in. I want to find what it is that I am drawn to and how I can pull this into my own work.

New Work

I have made some new work.  I think it is slowly getting somewhere but I really feel it lacks context.  It has a material context, but I am worried that beyond that the work is lacking something.
I feel the work has a visual grip but it hasn't been pushed through any ideas.  I feel like I have a lot of research to do and will continue to make these pieces which I feel are sketches.

This is the artist statement that accompanies this work:

The hard and the soft of it

I wish to show you something that you recognise
Even though you have never seen it before
And you do not know what it is.

Reference list

Internet references used for the year 2011

www.mydancetheskull.com........Website based in the UK for underground music and arts.  Looked at this site for inspiration in experimental music and also for the zine collection it links to.

http://liyenchong.com/collective.html   Auckland based artist who uses traditional hair embroidery techniques to make contemporary images.  I looked at her because I was interested in the amazing technical skill.

http://www.troelscarlsen.com/installations.html   Amazing artist.  I love this work because it is installation, objects, paintings and drawings.  He has ideas that he is constantly working through but in new ways.  I love his gothic painterly work and the antique works he projects onto, the anatomical aspect and the socio-political statements he is making.

http://wendytai.com/portfolio_current.htm  I was looking at this work for the conceptual elements.  I liked the ideas and also the work visually was very strong.  I also like to file away artists with Bio's that I think were well written.  I like this site a lot.  It is really clear and easy to use.

http://www.designersparty.com/category/Art?page=7  I was looking at this site for visual stimulation.  It seems to function as a blog would, therefore is diverse in range of things you can look at and places you can go with this as a starting point.

http://czarnagaleria.net/en/exhibits/27/slawek-pawszak-words-debase  Another multi dimensional site...looking at for various forms of inspiration.

http://wearesupervision.blogspot.com/2009/03/chicago-lesser-known-arts-history.html  I thought this particular blog post was great.  Was an amalgamation of business cards from gangs in Chicago.

http://www.christopherjonassen.com/8369/98686/gallery/devour  I loved this work.  They are images of frying pans that have been used.....a lot.......The photographic images are brilliant.

http://www.indesignlive.com/articles/projects/project-news/Tape-Melbourne#axzz1Xgy8yhZy  This piece made entirely from tape is amazing.  The structure is able to be crawled through...like a womb, tunnels of tape.

http://www.pkzart.com/pkz/artwork/Pages/gallery_2.html#9      Patricia Zalisko. I looked at this artists work for new ideas on surface texture, on colour and its use.

http://www.katewerblegallery.com/index.php?/artists/molly-smith/  This artist, Molly Smith lives and works out of New York city.  I love these sculptures for the vibrancy and also the amazing composition.  I love the unique material play and the sense of humour she seems to show.

http://www.gagosian.com/exhibitions/2009-09-15_cy-twombly/#/images/1/  This links to Cy Twombly sculptures.  They are found items, assembled and bound by white paint.  I love the way they are displayed and the way they stand within the space.

http://www.pseudoarcana.com/  Underground music website and label, run locally.  I like the really experimental approach and each disc put out is housed by another piece of great art.  Good ideas on humble, simple but strong imagery.

My pieces wish to rebel.  They wish to think of others and not just of themselves.  They hope.  They do not like the rules and they do not like the rule makers.  They would like to hide but in all their insecurities instead they stood out.  How awkward.  You can not offer your condolences and if you did it would not make me or them feel better.  We do appreciate your thoughts though.

Thanks

starting on some 2D work

This is a tricky road for me as it inevitably makes me want to structure it by cutting, folding etc.  I want to take the challenge however, and see if my ideas can translate in a flat way.  This really is just the beginning so I was not even sure if I should put up pictures of works in progress but it may be useful for me to refer back to.......

Figuring out material choice

I have been wanting to try new things out.  Now I feel my strong point is with composition I want to see how much I have learnt and what I want to see.  I want to include all sorts of media, photo's, pictures, mark making, painting, sculpture and minatures also.

I have been enjoying trying to do very little and trying to do it well.

I like the idea of having successful 2D pieces beside my 3D works.  I like the idea of making compositions based on colour and shapes, structures to support each other.

I have a strong idea of what colour choices to make for particular bodies of work.  For me the success would be when the whole body of work I make sits well together and forms a world, a narrative of it's own accord.  When it prompts memories or reminds people of something or in fact when it creates something entirely new, the piece will be a success.  That is all you can expect from something that has come from nothing.  That which comes from humble beginnings only asks to be looked at and to be seen.
